Book of the Month

Image result for aunt harriet's underground railroad in the sky

In our quest to build our students’ vocabulary and academic language, we are continuing our tradition of all classrooms reading the same book each month.  Our book-of-the month for February is Aunt Harriet’s Underground Railroad in the Sky, written by Faith Ringgold. This book is beautifully illustrated in full color and it reminds us of the story Tar Beach when Cassie flew over New York one summer for fun-filled adventures.  In this story, Cassie is going to soar into the sky again, and she and her brother,

Be Be, will meet a train full of people.  In the story Cassie tries to hop aboard the train, but it departs before she can climb aboard.  So, Harriet Tubman serves as Cassie’s guide and retraces the steps slaves took to escape on the real Underground Railroad.  At the end of the story, Cassie reunites with her brother and tells of the daring adventures.  Our students will learn African American history in a creative and colorful way.

Song of the Month

You’re a Grand Old Flag

Written by George M. Cohan

You’re a grand old flag
You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave
You’re the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave
Every heart beats true
‘Neath the red white and blue
Where there’s never a boast or brag
Should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Poem of the Month

February   – Anonymous

“Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November,
February has twenty-eight alone, All the rest have thirty-one;
Excepting leap year, that ‘s the time when February’s days are twenty-nine.”
