Book of the Month

Image result for suki's kimono

In our quest to build our students’ vocabulary and academic language, we are continuing our tradition of all classrooms   for March is Suki’s Kimonowritten by Cheiri Uegaki.  The book tells about a little Japanese girl who received a blue cotton kimono from her grandmother one summer.  The kimo was her favorite possession and a special memory of her grandmother’s visit during the summer.  Suki had a lot of fun during the summer with her grandmother.  She went to a street festival and learned how to do a circle dance. Suki honored her obachan by wearing her blue kimono on her first day back to school. When she had a turn to share what she did during the summer, Suki got carried away singing and dancing for her class.  Our students will learn an appreciation for diversity from this joyful story of a little girl whose spirit leads her to march and dance to her own drumbeat.

Poem of the Month

Spring  –   Robert McCracken

“Today is the day when bold kites fly,
When cumulus clouds roar across the sky.
When robins return, when children cheer,
When light rain beckons spring to appear.
Today is the day when daffodils bloom,
Which children pick to fill the room,
Today is the day when grasses green,
When leaves burst forth for spring to be seen.”

Song of the Month

Image result for there are many flags

There Are Many Flags

There are many flags in many lands,

There are flags of every hue,

But there is no flag however grand,

Like our own red, white and blue.

Say hurrah for our flag,

Our country’s flag,

Its stripes and its bright stars too.

But there is no flag however grand,

Like our own red, white and blue.
